General English

The General English courses at SPEED are designed for those who want to enhance their skills in everyday English. They lead to two ESOL exams under Cambridge International Examinations:

  • PET (Preliminary English Test) for Intermediate level (to be taken after completing GE 100 level course)
  • FCE (First Certificate in English) for Upper Intermediate level (to be taken after completing GE 200 level course)

A higher-level course also exists for teachers of English in secondary school. These courses have been customized for teachers and include practice work on teaching English in high school.

Core Course Content in General English:

All the General English courses include some basic content, which is customized and tailored for different levels of English proficiency:

  • Reading comprehension of articles and letters
  • Writing letters, stories and newsletters
  • Meeting etiquette and socializing skills
  • Listening for effective comprehension
  • Grammar and usage, and appropriate vocabulary

Additional Course Content for Beginner Level (GE 100)

  • Writing practice of informal letters, short stories and short notes.
  • Speaking and listening exercises focusing on comprehension, fluency and pronunciation, including debating and discussion various topics.

Additional Course Content for Intermediate Level (GE 200)

  • Advanced letter writing, e-mail writing, story writing, assessment design, and providing feedback.
  • Speaking and listening exercises focusing on debate and conversations with colleagues, concentrating on confidence, fluency and intonation.
