Business English

The Business English course combines practical skills for the workplace with English language skill development. These courses lead to Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC) examinations:

  • BEC (Preliminary) for Elementary level (to be taken after completing BE 100 level course)
  • BEC (Vantage) for Intermediate level (to be taken after completing BE 200 level course)

SPEED has designed Business English courses for three different levels to suit the needs of learners.

Core Course Content in Business English

All the Business English courses include some basic content, which is customized and tailored for different levels of English proficiency:

  • Presentations and public speaking
  • Business conversations, including agreeing and disagreeing, and negotiations
  • Meetings and networking skills
  • Using the telephone
  • Writing emails and letters
  • Listening for comprehension
  • Grammar and usage
  • Vocabulary development in the professional context

Additional Course Content for BE 50 (for non-management staff)

  • Basic speaking skills.
  • How to interact effectively with foreigners (Welcoming, greeting).
  • Understand instructions and notices.
  • Maintain professional office etiquette and manner.
  • Ask for and give personal details including the description of job responsibilities
  • Talk about own region, country, and culture in simple terms
  • Taking messages.

Additional Course Content for Pre-beginner Level (BE 50)

  • Introduce oneself and others in a meeting.
  • Basic meeting etiquette.
  • Professional telephone etiquette while receiving and providing information.
  • Discussing different problems in the workplace.
  • Writing and responding to email with appropriate use of grammar and vocabulary.

Additional Course Content for Beginner Level (BE 100)

  • Coping with workplace problems
  • Actively participating in meetings.
  • Listening skills in business conversations, selling techniques, and regarding behavior problems.
  • Raising awareness of behavioral and cross cultural factors which affect meetings.

Additional Course Content for Intermediate Level (BE 200)

  • Discussion and comprehension exercises on issues related to career planning, corporate entertainment, and conflict management.
  • Speaking and listening skills related to advising companies, raising business capital, headhunting, and leadership qualities.
